Black History in Spokane: A Legacy of Resilience, Activism, and Progress
Spokane’s Black community has played a vital role in shaping the city’s cultural, political, and economic landscape. From early pioneers like John W. Williams, one of Spokane’s first Black entrepreneurs, to civil rights leaders such as Carl Maxey, who fought tirelessly for racial justice, Black Spokane residents have built a legacy of resilience and activism.
Despite facing systemic discrimination in housing, employment, and education, the Black community has continuously worked toward progress. Today, institutions like the Carl Maxey Center and events like Spokane’s Juneteenth Celebration ensure that this rich history is honored and carried forward.
The story of Black Spokane is one of perseverance, empowerment, and an unwavering commitment to justice. As we reflect on the past, we also look ahead—toward a future of greater equity and opportunity for all.
